Bicycle Breakfast Tours

Today we hit the re-set button on our weekly bicycle breakfast tour.  With COVID restrictions lightening up, we set out to continue our tradition of riding our bikes to a local breakfast restaurant.

Today’s stop, The Dell in Bowness, Calgary.  The Dell is a diner that has been around since the 1950’s and serves up just about everything you would want for breakfast.  They do a handy take-out business that includes lunch and dinner as well.  They offer everything from toast and jam to liver and onions and Chinese food and seem to do a steady Continue reading

One of my happy places.

In the midst of COVID-19 and self-distancing (which is only slightly bothersome to someone who happens to be a closet hermit) the weather has warmed and we are officially on our bicycles – outside. Yahoo!

It struck me on this morning’s pre-breakfast tour of the City pathways, that this activity really does bring a smile to my face.  There is something about moving, self-propelled through space with rubber on the road and wind blowing through my helmet that ignites a kind of thrill that starts deep in my soul.

I’ve ridden my bike pretty much all my life.  Continue reading

Running Injured. Why you need to stop the insanity.

After a few decades of training and coaching I can finally say that ‘I’ve got it’.

I began my marathon training 2 ½ years after I started running regularly.  Until that time, I really hadn’t sustained any injuries, but as the mileage increased I found that things were showing up.  Shin pain, Achilles pain, some hip pain.  At the time, it all seemed manageable – with a little ice and ibuprofen.

I didn’t really have any idea how to train for this thing.  I got my hands on a schedule that was 6 days per week Continue reading

Why going back to basics can be a good idea.

With COVID-19 front and centre in today’s world – globally, it may be another time for us to consider that ‘if the going gets tough, the tough get going’.  Today’s blog has more to do with using this time of physical distancing and possibly isolation, to refocus our attention on physical and physiological basics.  Here’s what I wrote a couple of weeks ago before things hit the fan.

********

Sometimes it’s worth abandoning your current ‘program’ – whatever it is, and get back to basics.  Why?  Because sometimes we get a little ahead of ourselves, or Continue reading

Don’t let technology run the show. Why you should sometimes ignore the data.

Does your data drive you to perform or drive you nuts?

You’ve probably heard it.  I know I have.  “Wait, I have to turn on my watch/app.  You know that if it’s not on (name your wearable app), it didn’t happen”.  Are you feeling married to your data?  Do you collect it, log it and then never look at it again?  Or do you monitor it all so closely that you forget to ask yourself how you feel?  Do you think that you can’t get a proper workout without tracking your data?

What Continue reading

How you (we) might benefit from coaching.

Life coach, health coach, triathlon coach, swimming coach, business coach.  Coaching seems to be a big thing right now.  If you’ve ever wondered whether you might benefit from hiring a coach – here are some things to consider.

First and foremost the role of the coach is to help you achieve whatever it is you are hoping to achieve.  They are not meant to tell you what to do (or do the work for you) – but to facilitate your ‘doing’.  If you are looking for someone to help change your life’s direction in some Continue reading

“Because it’s Tuesday, and that’s what I do on Tuesdays” – Why routines are important to us.

The title of this blog comes from when I was having a conversation with a friend and I was trying to remember something that had happened on a particular day.  It started with the comment – “it was Tuesday – because that’s what I do on Tuesdays”.  It got a laugh from us both, but it also got me thinking about how dedicated I seem to be to some routines.  Was I nuts?  Rigid?  Predictable? Or just dedicated?

After the Christmas holidays I heard how much people were looking forward to getting back to their routines.  Food choices, exercise programs, daily habits.  It got me thinking about Continue reading

Choose the ‘hard’, enjoy the ‘easy’.

A wise person (Dr. Norris) announced to a group of runners training for distance, that in training and sport (and probably life) – weddings are optional, funerals are mandatory.  The meaning behind such a strange statement is clear.  Sometimes the things we are good at are the first things we choose to do but are the last things that we need to do.  Speed work, strength training or high intensity work is mostly not much fun – like funerals to some.  They require reaching beyond any semblance of ‘comfort’ and digging deep.  By doing this work though, one likely works Continue reading

The Rear-view Mirror – your training season in review.

Full disclosure – not all of what follows are entirely my thoughts.  Many thanks to L. Marcoux at Training Peaks for the inspiration in writing this blog.

In life, I’m not one to encourage bemoaning the past but in order to look forward, sometimes it’s necessary to review what was, to figure out what could be.  Looking forward to your next training season requires a bit of reflection on your last season to be sure.  By looking closely at your successes as well as where you may have come up short – you’ll have a better picture of Continue reading

Gotta 2020 Project Yet?

With the late fall upon us and the end of the year drawing near, I know that many people start to think about what they’d like to accomplish in the upcoming year.  Maybe it’s improved health, embarking on volunteerism, more recreational travel, maybe something else.

With the year 2020 up next, I got thinking about my own goals and thought it might be fun to set 20 small (or not) goals for myself in 2020.  At first I thought that this might be training for and doing a half ironman triathlon (since it’s been 10 years since my last one).  Continue reading
