Local Tips on Winter Running

As we head into the next season of running – there are a few things to consider if you plan to run outside.

I was out one morning this week after a light snowfall and got thinking about how one’s gait can change with a little (or a lot) of snow and accompanying ice.  A friend once described my winter technique as “4 wheel drive”.  Ok, so maybe I’m a little cautious on the slippery stuff, but 4 wheel drive?  Really?  Yes, really.

There is much to love about running outside in the winter season.  The air is fresh, the Continue reading

This’ll only take 5 Minutes.

Do you have a list of things that you would like to do but feel you don’t have time for them? Feeling overwhelmed by the job jar?

Have you ever really looked at how much time it might take to accomplish some of these things?

What if you have 5 minutes?  What might you be able to do with that?  If you reframed your list to 5 minute tasks – would it help? What would it look like?

I had the pleasure of having a conversation with a friend this week about being overwhelmed by ‘all the things we need Continue reading

Alethea Sport – a home-grown Gem.

I met Nancy Lynch quite accidentally.  Our meeting was brief, delightful and her product – outstanding. Nancy is an innovator.

Alethea Sport is a race search and review platform for endurance events.  It’s well-populated, thorough and dynamic.  If you’re into endurance activities, you really need to check it out.  www.aletheasport.com

I have toiled over race calendars from the internet and magazines for decades, but has become my go-to for events to suggest to my clients.

Let me tell you a bit about it and then let you go to discover for yourself just how many events or races you’ve never Continue reading

What’s up with your App?

As you’re probably aware, if you’re looking to track something – there’s probably and App for that.  When it comes to tracking food and fitness, especially if you have some particular goals you’re trying to achieve – you will probably want to choose an App that offers convenience and ease of use – but also enough accurate detail to be truly useful.

Food and Fitness tracking Apps are convenient, generally easy to use and can save time if you’re interested in tracking data.

The benefits of using an App to track your progress are simple.  They can provide:  Continue reading

What makes a cycling Princess – a Princess?

The whole meaning behind Princess Pedal – is a little tongue-in-cheek.

Several years ago – It seemed to me that there were a bunch of gals out there like myself who wanted to be fit, enjoy the challenge of training with some intensity, and weren’t the least bit interested in joining a highly competitive group to have fun.  Like-minded gals who knew how to play hard-ish and enjoy the fruits of their labour (and sometimes fruits of the vine) with smiles on their faces.  Self-proclaimed, sort-of Princesses (but not really) – so to speak.  Thus, Princess Pedal was born.   Continue reading

So much more than you’d think…

I have been so lucky to have been given the opportunities that I have had in my career.  Many of the most rewarding experiences have been the ones where I get to watch the birth of an athlete.  It sounds hokey but to me, the best part of seeing someone start something new, take on a big-hairy-goal and then accomplish it – is witnessing the unintended consequences that come along for the ride.

This year alone, I’ve seen moms tackle enormous hills on their bikes that would make anyone cry, and accomplish 100km rides – all in the same week; Continue reading

When you’re ready, you’re ready.

“We just decided that it was time we both got on top of our nutrition and lose some weight”

“I just decided that I needed to start moving more”

“I was tired of being tired all of the time”

“The kids were gone and I felt it was time…”

I’ve heard it.  You’ve heard it.  You may have even said it.

Being ready for change is the single biggest part of actually making change.  As a good friend of mine has often said – you can’t push a rope.  It doesn’t matter how much you hear Continue reading

Trees and Trails

I had the most wonderful run the other day. It’s been a very long time since I’ve had that kind of experience and it was encouraging.  I’ve spent the better part of the last couple of decades injured on and off and it was such a pleasure to enjoy the entire hour, on the trails and in my head.  I will always marvel at how something like a simple run can elevate ones mood and outlook.  It really is the ultimate therapy.  Powerful on every level.

I’ve been attending the Fitness Table workouts in Calgary and Continue reading
