The adventures begin this year, with the Princess Bread.
The history behind the bread is that a long time ‘friend’ kindly shared chain-letter-style-sourdough-sweet bread dough with a few of her friends. Now, let’s get this out in the open right away. ALL of us groaned at the thought of having to be tied to a 10day process that not only took this “goo” from batter to bundt, but also kindly produced yet 4 more cups of the stuff that we could then share to 4 of OUR own friends. Oh, goody. I had a feeling that I was about to make a few frenemies.
As it happened, this came down the pike just before Princess Pedal camp two years ago and because I abhor throwing things out (especially food) when it can be baked and given away – I was compelled to bring it to camp. Instead of a bundt pan (which I have never successfully been able to bake and have it come out of the pan in one piece) I chose to make a couple of loaves. I served it with breakfast one morning and lo and behold – the Princesses liked it toasted! An instant hit so I made the choice to carry on with the flippin’ batter, producing more of the crazy stuff.
I have discovered something though that has helped me maintain my pool of friends AND my sanity. You can freeze the batter and bring it out when you need it AND you can use it up by skipping a step or two in the process. This second discovery is a new one and one I am happy to share (if you too have been honoured with the same kind of batter – or something similar).
So, what’s the adventure? Well this morning as we were preparing our exit to Penticton, I fed the dough with milk, sugar and flour. I then zipped the plastic bag, mushed the dough until smooth and put it in one of the boxes that we would take with us. And then… I couldn’t find the dough. I was sure it made it to the car, but I couldn’t find it anywhere. I got out of the car after 3 hrs of driving to have a look for it again (I was sure that the bag was going to explode any minute) – and couldn’t find it. All the way to Revelstoke, I worried that: a) I had somehow misplaced it in our condo and we would be coming home to some great mess in a few weeks, b) it was all over the bottom of some box in the car or c) I had in my distraction while getting ready to leave, dumped it down the garbage chute. Never fear though. The dough was safely where I left it (isn’t it always?) and if all goes well, we will have Princess Bread for breakfast once again.
