I’ll have a serving, please.

I was struck again the other day by how unsurprising it is that we as a populous, have an issue with body weight.  I say this because I was making some cornbread for the first time.  The recipe suggested an 8″round cake pan.  So, I started digging through my baking pans cupboard and ran across my as yet unused cake pans along with well used (excuse the rusty spots) cake pans that my grandma used for the cakes she made my dad when he was a kid.  Ok, so we’re talking 1930’s and 40’s.  She probably used these pans until I was a child when she wisely began letting others bake the cakes.

This particular blog entry probably requires no further discussion but I can’t end it here.

No one has to remind us how full we are after leaving a restaurant.  I can’t remember the last meal I had out that I didn’t bring half or at least part of my meal home.  It’s often just too much food.

Unfortunately, it’s not only what we eat when we’re out.  We can’t just blame the restaurants and chefs.  We have learned the concept of more is better.  What if we turned that around?  What if we consciously stopped eating before we were full?  How do you think we’d make out? What if we ‘treated’ ourselves to smaller servings? Hmm.  How can you make this something you do that’s really special for yourself?

Care to treat yourself this week?

Choose a meal to challenge yourself with.  Dinner is probably where most of us stray to over-full, so maybe this is the best meal to work with.  Try taking smaller portions and stop eating before you’re full.  Wait a few minutes and if you’re still hungry, then eat.  If you find yourself comfortably full, then stop.   Use your triceps muscles and push away from the table.  Let what you learn from this guide you toward a more balanced approach to ‘serving’ yourself.
