Comox Bike Tour – Day 5

Early this morning the rain was still falling but by our 9:40am departure time, we were golden.  Sun, blue skies, wet roads (so a few rooster tails off rear tires).  Undeterred, we were ready for another terrific day for riding.  On the advice of friends, we adjusted our expectations on the total distance and went instead for a brunch tour of Merville which is north east of the Town of Comox.  Perfect choice.  We meandered through the countryside again and found ourselves at the Merville General Store and Cafe for a terrific breakfast.  Made perfect by the fact that Stephen picked up the bill  for all (thanks Stephen!).  This was truly a General Store.  Selling everything from groceries to mousetraps to booze.  Warning though – you can’t use their restroom unless you’re planning to stay – so don’t even think about it.  The food was good, coffee delicious and the service – with a smile.

Towards town we realized that in fact we had been on a steady uphill climb from Comox, which made for a rather pleasant return trip.  We circled past the Military Base and enjoyed one last air rescue helicopter doing some training.

Since we had some time to fill between ride and dinner – we headed out for a Premium wine tasting at 40 Knots Winery. This was a very nice experience so if you’re in the area and like to taste wine and get some local history – it’s worth doing.  We wandered on the property a bit before we left and took a few photos.

Our final dinner out together was topped off at Martine’s Bistro and it didn’t disappoint.  The unique fare, quirky and artsy surroundings and service made for an outstanding finale to our week.  I think overall though the calories in beat the calories out – but in a good way.

This was the first time we have offered a trip to the Comox Valley and will likely do it again.  The group this week was kind enough to be our ‘experimental group’ and have given us good feedback for the next time.  The Comox Valley has a lot to offer and we have a few more routes to try and of course coffee shops to check out.

For now though.  Ride safely and be kind everyone.
