So, Saturday August 7th was the long-anticipated date for the Badlands Gran Fondo 2021. I think that it was officially but unofficially the 2020 event – postponed due to COVID. A few fewer participants arrived, than were registered BUT the turnout was really good – and very COVID safe for those inquiring minds. Thanks so much to the BLGF group. They were challenged with fewer-than-usual volunteers but managed to pull off another excellent event. The whole set-up from breakfast to lunch and aid stations to post event showers (after massage or whatever) – for one’s enjoyment, as required.
In the Princess Pedal, Princess – camp – we had Phyllis, Val, Kim, Super-Sue and myself. It was a great day. We anticipated a NE wind in the morning – and it was calm. We also expected a SE wind later in the morning –and yes indeed it reared its ugly head. Fortunately for Phyllis, Val and myself, we chose the 75km event and left the brunt of the ugly headwind to Super-Sue and Kim to take on.
As it happened, Super-Sue managed to get a couple of flats around 92km (yes, that’s two flats!) and eventually caught a ride back to the finish line. Phyllis, feeling somewhat gassed at about 50km hung on to not only make it to the Wayne Baconsaurus station for a photo op – but pulled it out to finish strong with Val and me. Val, who had not been on her bike for any long distances for a while, had me challenged. I can descend nicely – but this gal can climb – even when she thinks she can’t!
Princess Kim. Oh, dear Princess Kim. Her bike was stolen out of her garage a month ago – but there she was, in Drumheller with a new ride, for the big event. Thought she might do 50. Then 75. Then settled on 100Km. I’ve never met anyone quite like P.K. There is more there than meets the eye. Deeper competitiveness. More desire. Greater drive than I’ve ever seen. To finish. And she did. With a smile on her face.
In all. Drumheller Badlands Gran Fondo was a success for everyone. Thanks to all Princesses for first, showing up and second, for wearing your Princess Jersey. We don’t overwhelm, but we do make our presence known.
Until next time. LiveSplendidly!
