Why going back to basics can be a good idea.

With COVID-19 front and centre in today’s world – globally, it may be another time for us to consider that ‘if the going gets tough, the tough get going’.  Today’s blog has more to do with using this time of physical distancing and possibly isolation, to refocus our attention on physical and physiological basics.  Here’s what I wrote a couple of weeks ago before things hit the fan.

********

Sometimes it’s worth abandoning your current ‘program’ – whatever it is, and get back to basics.  Why?  Because sometimes we get a little ahead of ourselves, or Continue reading

Don’t let technology run the show. Why you should sometimes ignore the data.

Does your data drive you to perform or drive you nuts?

You’ve probably heard it.  I know I have.  “Wait, I have to turn on my watch/app.  You know that if it’s not on (name your wearable app), it didn’t happen”.  Are you feeling married to your data?  Do you collect it, log it and then never look at it again?  Or do you monitor it all so closely that you forget to ask yourself how you feel?  Do you think that you can’t get a proper workout without tracking your data?

What Continue reading

How you (we) might benefit from coaching.

Life coach, health coach, triathlon coach, swimming coach, business coach.  Coaching seems to be a big thing right now.  If you’ve ever wondered whether you might benefit from hiring a coach – here are some things to consider.

First and foremost the role of the coach is to help you achieve whatever it is you are hoping to achieve.  They are not meant to tell you what to do (or do the work for you) – but to facilitate your ‘doing’.  If you are looking for someone to help change your life’s direction in some Continue reading

So much more than you’d think…

I have been so lucky to have been given the opportunities that I have had in my career.  Many of the most rewarding experiences have been the ones where I get to watch the birth of an athlete.  It sounds hokey but to me, the best part of seeing someone start something new, take on a big-hairy-goal and then accomplish it – is witnessing the unintended consequences that come along for the ride.

This year alone, I’ve seen moms tackle enormous hills on their bikes that would make anyone cry, and accomplish 100km rides – all in the same week; Continue reading

When you’re ready, you’re ready.

“We just decided that it was time we both got on top of our nutrition and lose some weight”

“I just decided that I needed to start moving more”

“I was tired of being tired all of the time”

“The kids were gone and I felt it was time…”

I’ve heard it.  You’ve heard it.  You may have even said it.

Being ready for change is the single biggest part of actually making change.  As a good friend of mine has often said – you can’t push a rope.  It doesn’t matter how much you hear Continue reading

Trees and Trails

I had the most wonderful run the other day. It’s been a very long time since I’ve had that kind of experience and it was encouraging.  I’ve spent the better part of the last couple of decades injured on and off and it was such a pleasure to enjoy the entire hour, on the trails and in my head.  I will always marvel at how something like a simple run can elevate ones mood and outlook.  It really is the ultimate therapy.  Powerful on every level.

I’ve been attending the Fitness Table workouts in Calgary and Continue reading

Princess Pedal Road Clinic 2018

The Princess Pedal Road Clinic has been another wonderful experience.  With the help of my talented and enthusiastic assistant coach Princess Ashley, we have had the pleasure of working with another terrific group of ladies.

Princess Cylclocross who although cycled many years ago – had lost her mojo for riding.  Her re-awakened skills and new-found confidence in the saddle however has her itching to hit the road again.

Princess Leia who after a couple of years away from riding was looking for a group to ride with and a little instruction on the how-to’s of hills and pace-lines. Continue reading
